BlackBerry Announces New Mid-Range Smartphone

Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry unveiled a new mid-range handset ‘Leap’ at the MWC. The company has reportedly said that BlackBerry ‘Leap’ will cost $275 (around €246/₹17,000) and hit stores next month in select regions.

“In today’s mobile world – influenced by trends like BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) – where personal and corporate data are frequently under attack from hackers, companies and everyday consumers are finding out the hard way that mobile security is paramount,” said Ron Louks, President, Devices and Emerging Solutions.

“BlackBerry Leap was built specifically for mobile professionals who see their smartphone device as a powerful and durable productivity tool that also safeguards sensitive communications at all times,” he added.

5.0-inch BlackBerry Leap ships with the latest BB v10.3.1 OS. The smartphone is powered by 1.5GHz Snapdragon MSM8960 processor coupled with 2GB RAM. BlackBerry Leap comes with 16GB inbuilt memory which can be expand upto 128 GB. It sports 8.0-megapixel camera on the rear side and a 2.0-megapixel snapper on the front. The smartphone is backed up by 2800 mAh battery which last upto 25 hours.

The handset will be available in grey and white, and at $279 unlocked, it’s a relatively affordable option for budget-conscious people. In addition to the Leap, the company also teased a dual-screen smartphone with a sliding keyboard nicknamed by CEO John Chen as “the Slider.”
